Party Theme

It's Christmas in the Country

This party is so easy to do, and is easy on the budget. The main supplies needed are from a craft store, or your own backyard.

As usual, dress the porch, deck or fireplace mantel with fresh cut pine boughs. Run any color of ribbon around the branches, or even wrap beads and ornaments around them too, but small ones. If you can find a small batterypack (usually found at hobby stores and dimestores), you can use christmas lights in them. That really brightens the area up.

Next, cover your table in the same color cloth as in your wrapped green's or make a runner down the center of the table. Sew some fancy gold tassles on the ends if you like. Put a clear big bowl in the center and fill it with glass mixed color ornaments, all shapes and sizes. Tuck in pine boughs with a few mini bows tied to the branches.

Buy, or take out your crystal candle holders and put contrasting colored candles in them. You don't even need the candle holders to match, or even be the same height, just put them around the bowl. This will illuminate the room, and cast a glow on the colored glass ornaments in the bowl giving a shimmery effect to the table. If you are talented, try to glue gun some of the same fabric as the runner or table cloth to a piece of cardboard to make matching placements to use that day. Trim these with ribbon or gold braid.

On the fireplace mantle, or just around the room on tables, lay out favorite stuffed animals or small toys and mini pinecones.

Get 6 white birch logs (cut the same length and diameter, approximately 2 1/2 feet by 6 inches around) and lay 3 of them on the bottom, then stack 2 on top of them, then 1 on the very top, like a pyramid. Tie a bow around both ends, wrapping all logs. Using a glue gun, glue a few pinecones and a mistletoe on top in the center. Display the logs by your fire grate, or if you don't have a fireplace, don't worry, this looks fine by a doorway too. I am using forrest greens and deep red with gold shot through the material and an alternating same color plaids for my theme. I am using gold ornaments and red and green bows all around... red candles and green and red twinkle lights.

beaded snowflakes ornament set If you don't sew, buy some green and red felt at the craft store (about a yard). Cut out stocking patterns traced on a cardboard pattern with pinking shears. Then glue the 2 together at the seams with a glue gun. Decorate it anyway you want with cast off items (extra ribbon, fur, gold braid) anything to dress it up, even old jewelry (pearls and rinestones)! You can buy special ARTEX paints that write on material and write the names of who belongs to the stocking. Even do a small one for your pet. If you have any leftover upholstery material, or buy bolt ends of it in the material section of a store, these work well too. I used an old fashioned brocade from a chair I recovered, and glued gold braid on the top with a tassel.

If you have a thrift shop near you, go check out the basket selection. They look great filled with pine cones, small birch logs, or fake red apples. If you have a pair of old wooden skis, prop them up by a door. A sleigh or small toboggan looks cool too! Hang some ice skates up on a peg and it looks like you just got through playing in the snow!

Ever thought of what to do with all your mismatched mittens? String a rope across a window like a swag. Then clothes pin the mittens in a row. You can pick up colorful odd ones at the thrift shop. All those old winter long scarves can be draped like a valance over a window. This is a neat way to use them too.

Well, there are a million things you can do... but these are a few inexpensive and very fun ways to decorate for that old fashioned Christmas look. Have fun, add your favorite friends and food, and enjoy...
